You’re In Clover

I search out inspirational writing on health these days, whether or not it’s related to pre-diabetes. I loved Frank Bruni’s piece in Sunday’s New York Times about his loss of vision. He confronts the darkness of his future, but ultimately chooses gratitude. “I’m in clover,” he writes, counting his blessings in the face of possible blindness.

A good reminder whenever I begin to feel any trace of self-pity. Pre-diabetes is actually a blessing in disguise. All the literature out there says that it is reversible, that progression to diabetes is not inevitable. That is a beautiful, wonderful thing.

And more than that, the preventative measures are completely within your control and far from grueling. They are not expensive treatments or invasive surgical procedures or medications with unpleasant side-effects. They are nurturing and deeply enjoyable, like a delicious vegetable omelet for breakfast and long walks in the fresh air and good sleep.

In clover, indeed.
